Heart, Blood Sugar, Cholesterol & Weight: A Naturopathic Approach

Key takeaway: High blood pressure, high cholesterol, blood sugar problems, and stubborn weight gain aren't four separate issues that happen to show up together. In most cases they share the same upstream drivers - how well your thyroid and metabolism are actually functioning (often below what a standard lab panel catches), how your stress hormones are balanced, and how much oxidative and toxic burden your body is carrying. Treating each number with a different specialist and a different prescription often misses the pattern that would let you address all four at once.

I work with patients virtually across Ontario — Toronto, Vaughan, Mississauga, Hamilton, Ottawa, London, and everywhere in between — so distance from a clinic is never the barrier to getting this addressed properly.

So why do blood pressure, high cholesterol, blood sugar problems, and stubborn weight gain often show up together? In my practice, this cluster usually traces back to a small set of overlapping drivers, not four unrelated numbers: subclinical low thyroid function that standard lab panels often miss, which slows metabolism broadly enough to touch blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and weight all at once; blood sugar dysregulation, sometimes present well before a formal prediabetes or diabetes diagnosis; chronic stress that shifts the balance of cortisol relative to DHEA and pregnenolone; oxidative stress from diet and from internal and external toxin exposure, including endotoxin from gut bacteria; and hormonal imbalance, particularly the progesterone-to-estrogen balance. A cardiologist manages blood pressure. An endocrinologist manages blood sugar. A GP might handle cholesterol and refer out for weight - each treating their own number, often without much conversation between them.

Not four separate problems.

One shared upstream picture.

Addressed together - not with four different prescriptions.

Naturopathic care for this cluster looks at thyroid and metabolic function, stress-hormone balance, sex-hormone balance, and oxidative burden as the shared upstream picture, and builds a plan around what these four numbers have in common. That doesn't replace your prescribing physician or existing medications - it works alongside them.

What I won't do, and what I do instead

I don't reach for extreme, high-restriction approaches - no ketogenic diets, no intermittent fasting, no carnivore diets, and I'd put GLP-1 medications in that same category. They can produce fast results, but the weight tends to come back once you stop, and the metabolic and stress-hormone cost is real. I'm also cautious about high-dose fish oil and omega-3/6 supplementation - it's a more nuanced conversation than most people expect, and not something I recommend by default. And when it comes to blood pressure, I don't recommend broadly restricting salt. In most cases sodium doesn't need to be limited - it's essential for nerve and cardiac function, and needs to stay balanced with potassium, which helps retain magnesium and potassium inside your cells, including heart cells. Salt becomes a problem when it's coming from processed, fried, or refined foods, not from salting home-cooked food to taste. For weight specifically, the approach that's worked best - for me and for patients - balances protein, fat, and carbohydrate roughly 40/40/20, keeps fat mostly from saturated sources, and avoids the deep caloric restriction that suppresses metabolism. It requires cutting fried foods, seed oils, and heavily processed foods, but not much else. Alongside that, supporting the hormones behind metabolism matters just as much as getting the macronutrients right: thyroid and progesterone support for women, DHEA and pregnenolone support for many mid-aged men, and attention to micronutrients a standard multivitamin often misses, particularly potassium and calcium.

Is this safe if I'm already on medication?

Yes. Naturopathic care here is designed to work with your existing medical treatment, not instead of it. Any changes to diet, supplementation, or lifestyle are coordinated with what you're already taking, and if your numbers improve enough that your prescribing doctor wants to adjust a medication, that conversation happens with them. If you're on medication now, that's useful information for your first consult, not a barrier to it.

The four spokes: blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and weight

Blood pressure. Subclinical thyroid function, blood sugar dysregulation, stress, oxidative burden, and hormonal shifts in the progesterone-to-estrogen balance - the same drivers as above, worked through in full for blood pressure specifically, without a blanket recommendation to cut salt. Is naturopathic treatment for high blood pressure covered by your health benefits? Most Ontario extended health plans that include naturopathic care cover blood-pressure-related visits the same as any other consultation - check your plan or ask us directly. Read the full picture in our Natural High Blood Pressure Recovery Resource.

Cholesterol. Cholesterol numbers are frequently read in isolation, disconnected from the thyroid and metabolic picture that's actually driving them. Is natural cholesterol treatment covered by your health benefits? Yes, in most cases - the same extended health coverage that applies to a general naturopathic consultation applies here. Read the full story in our Natural Cholesterol Treatment guide.

Diabetes and blood sugar. Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are often the clearest expression of this whole cluster - naturopathic support here works alongside your medication, not instead of it. Is natural diabetes treatment covered by your health benefits? Most Ontario extended health benefit plans include naturopathic care for diabetes management - worth checking before assuming it's an out-of-pocket cost. Read the full story in our Natural Diabetes & Blood Sugar Treatment guide.

Weight. The 40-40-20 framework, why extreme diets and GLP-1 drugs tend to backfire, and the hormone support - thyroid, progesterone, DHEA, pregnenolone - that makes the difference. Is natural weight-loss support covered by your health benefits? Weight-management consultations delivered as naturopathic care are generally covered the same way as any other visit under an extended health plan. Ready to find out what's actually driving your numbers?

If two or more of these - blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, or weight - have been treated as separate problems without much progress, a naturopathic consultation looks at what connects them. These same thyroid, stress-hormone, and blood-sugar drivers also show up as anxiety, poor sleep, menopause symptoms, and digestive issues — see our Hormone Imbalance guide for that side of the picture.
